What's the purpose of these?

I obviously work in a bike shop and have been seeing these things come in for quite some time now, and I've been bothered by it since the first time I ever heard the name mentioned....Tony Hawk bikes. Why do these exist? What person thought that the name of a SKATEBOARD personality would be great to market "BMX" bikes? Are we they trying to say that bikes and skateboards are the same thing? Because the last time I checked they were very different. Are we that dumb in America that we can't tell the difference between the two sports? The general public must actually think this because on several occasions while out riding I've had numerous people yell "Tony Hawk" out to me and whomever I'm with. Or in one instance had some say directly to me (when I was eyeing a handrail up) "are you gonna Tony Hawk that thing?". Really? Come on people let's get alittle educated as to what's going on in the world. That's like me saying that Shaq is the best football player I've ever seen. Or Tom Brady endorsing a line of tennis rackets, you know he's not a tennis player. So by then selling these bikes are they saying that he rides bmx? I highly doubt it. These bikes are very low quality too, which makes them even worse. They are assembled wrong by the toy stores/ dept. stores that sell them, so ultimately end up at the shop when the brakes don't work or whatever usually goes wrong with them. What happened to the days of Huffy or Murray they were of the same class. Are they trying to say these are better because some guy that has his own skateboard company and video games is putting his name on them? Honestly I've lost any kind of respect I had for Tony Hawk after seeing these. If  I were him I'd wanna have my name removed from a product of such awful quality. But I guess money makes you forget about your standards. You don't see Mat Hoffman skateboards because everyone would be like WTF? Why does he have a skateboard line? And I doubt Hoffman would ever do anything like that because he knows it's straight out DUMB.
I feel sorry for the kids that actually have to ride these things. They are clearly targeting the parents naivety. There are better bikes out there for not much more money. I'm not saying that everyone should be able to afford a 300 or 400 dollar bike, but if people did their research they'd find there are affordable bikes out there for around $200. Which I believe is about double what these things retail for, but will also last twice and long and probably be alot safer. Plus will be assembled by someone that actually can work on a bicycle. Most of these "stores" that sell these bikes have assemblers come in one or two days a week and build everything they need built, from grills to bikes to furniture. They usually get paid by the piece too, so that means they try to speed through everything as quick as possible so they make some money. At a shop bikes are assembled by a  MECHANIC, usually one that has a background in BIKES. From working in the bicycle industry for years I've seen my fair share of damaged bikes come through in shipping. Most all complete bikes are made overseas, so they see alot of handling before ever being assembled. At a shop you would NEVER see that bike sitting on the sales floor being sold (well maybe at SOME shops), that would be taken care of before it was ever sold. It would be made right or sent back, not at a dept store. They sell whatever they get in messed up or not, scratched damaged, you name it. I've seen so many bikes come through the shop doors with so many things wrong with them I could write an entire book about just that.
Top of the bottom of the line
Well enough of the rambling about this. Let's hope that these things disappear soon. Support BMX company's that put R&D into their product, and shops with the knowledge to properly fix them.

Been getting handed alot of table pictures as of late thanks to John Gabler. So I figured I'd share some of them. No secret that tables are my favorite. Nothing else on a BMX bike looks or feels as good in the air. The following were all shot at Skater's Edge in Taunton Ma. Since winter is still being a bastard, and this is our local indoor park we've been forced to shred here. Tables for days.

Pembroke skatepark meeting follow up

I went to the meeting for the Pembroke skatepark last night. I was productive to a point, still need to raise money. We're halfway there. We need to get more people involved. I was kinda discouraged that so few people showed up. Does no one from the South Shore care about a decent park being built? Especially bike dudes. This is everyone's chance to have their say in what they'd like to see go into a park. No more pre-fab garbage will be used in the area. I'm looking for this park to set the tone for the rest of the South Shore. I think Hingham beat us to the punch as far as the first non pre-fab park. But they aren't gonna allow bikes and that's a whole other story. Pembroke also has TWICE the square footage they used for Hingham, so right there means we can do so much more. I'm calling on everyone to pitch in and help out. We NEED to get this in the eyes of more people. We need to raise money. We need YOUR help! I don't think alot of people can see the light at the end of the tunnel with this project, but I'm gonna tell you with your help...it is gonna be there.....SOONER! After talking to the builder last night I have a better respect for him and feel like he is the guy for the job. He seems eager to please. He wants to build something unique, which is something that will make people want to ride this park. I agree with him. Which is why I got involved in this project, I wanted to see something different be built. Hopefully other towns will follow in years to come and rid of of these crap parks we've be cursed with. If you wanna get or be involved please contact me at tonylong1974@gmail.com or the friends of Pembroke skatepark on Facebook.

Table of the year prize

I am not in the contest
After some thought I've decided that the prize for "Table of the Year" is gonna be a......framed poster sized print of your table with: Table of the Year printed on it. Cool to hang up for some memories. Whatcha think about that? I told you guys it wasn't gonna be crazy but, I think that's cool. Something you can keep and hang up somewhere in your house or where ever.

FBM "The Bar is Closed"

Saw that this was posted up, thought I'd share it with anyone that hasn't seen it. Old FBM videos are some of the best BMX videos out. Love these guys.

Skatepark Etiquette

Tim Roxburgh photo John Gabler
With the winter being as brutal as it's been in the Northeast everyone has been flooding the parks. With packed sessions comes alot more collisions. I think it's due to the younger guys out there that have never been taught to wait their turn or if they're gonna take a run to keep their heads up at the park and pay attention to their surroundings. Nothing can be more dangerous to a younger dude on a bike riding "blindly" and have somebody else coming full steam at something in the park and and having the two collide. Or even worse have someone doing a huge air and a dude ride under them, the dude in the air has nowhere to go but down and if your under him, well....BAM! As an older rider, when I'm at the park and I see a younger unexperienced rider doing something wrong I feel it only necessary to correct his actions as it could prevent someone from getting hurt. I urge any dude to do the same. I think we were all in this stage once in our lives and I don't think there's anything wrong with younger kids going to the park. I just think that they need to learn to be alert in a skatepark surrounding. It's something that their parents can't teach them. It has to be learned. Have some patience with the younger dudes...you were once in their shoes. Set an example.

Maul's Brawl 2011

Just a reminder that this is coming up real quick. Got alot of great sponsors this year. Psyched on doing these, it's one of my favorite events that we put on throughout the course of the year. We had such a awesome turnout last year, I hope that this years Brawl' can rival the previous. Hope to see everyone there..

Pembroke skatepark meeting

The town of Pembroke is having a meeting to discuss the building of the park in their town. If anyone out there is interested in having a "rideable" park locally, then I would suggest that you make it a point to come out and voice  your opinion on the subject. This is open to the public. The builder and town officials will be there as well, so you can see for yourself the status of the park. This park will definitely be allowing bikes. So it is important to come out and show your support. I'll be there.

oldman=old trick
Getting up there in the age dept. Although not really feeling like it. I'm gonna take 37 just like I took 36,35,34, etc.....it's just another year down in the books. One step closer to who knows what, being old I guess. Screw it, your only as old as you feel...So I guess I'm 25 then. Haha

Happy Groundhogs Day

Well the groundhog didn't see his shadow today, so let's hope he's right and we have an early spring. Bring it on!

Skater's Edge edit

Stupid little edit I made on my phone the other night at the park. Nothing crazy, just fun.

Groundhogs Day

Let's just pray ,that little rodent doesn't see his shadow. So we can have an early Spring! I know I'm not alone when I say, I've had enough of this winter and the snow! I don't know why we as American's feel the need to look to a groundhog to predict the weather, but at this point in year I'll believe in anything.
